FOGO Processing Facility

The FOGO Processing Facility (FPF) currently processes over 25,000 tonnes of Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) material per annum, which is then converted to compost.

The steps in the process are as follows:

1. Tipping Floor

Raw FOGO material is spread out onto the tipping floor for sorting, where large or dangerous items are removed.
There are four bio-filters which filter out odours from the facility using a mixture of wood chips, organic material and natural micro organisms.

2. Shredding and Screening

Front-end loaders place the sorted FOGO material into a shredder. The shredded FOGO material is transferred via a conveyor belt to a trommel for screening. Any inorganic waste such as plastic is removed.

3. External Contractor

The screened FOGO material is then delivered to external contractors for mixing and preparation.

4. Composting

Compost piles are covered with windrows for 4-6 weeks.

5. Final Screening

Compost piles are screened to remove any remaining inorganic material to ensure high quality compost is produced.

6. Maturation

Compost piles are left to mature for 4-6 weeks.

7. Final Product

The final compost product is now ready for commercial and retail outlets.
