Residential Bin Systems
Throughout Western Australia, there are a variety of bin-systems: 2-bin, 3-bin GO and 3-bin FOGO.
Traditionally, most households have had a dark green general waste bin and a yellow-topped recycling bin.
During 2017, the Resource Recovery Group trialled a 3-bin Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) system with the City of Melville. This consists of a new 240L lime-green-topped FOGO bin and a 120L red-topped general waste bin. During 2019, the 3-bin FOGO system was rolled out to residents in the City of Melville, City of Fremantle and Town of East Fremantle. This roll out has now been completed.
During 2020-21, more WA councils are rolling out FOGO including City of Bayswater, Bassendean and Albany.
Other Councils have opted to transition first to a lime-green-topped GO (Garden Organics only) bin.
